Your new floor is laid, the thermostat is wired in, and all you want is to feel that warmth underfoot. It is a completely understandable impulse — but activating your radiant floor heating system too soon is one of the most common post-installation mistakes, and it can crack your tile, weaken the floor assembly, or in a worst-case scenario, permanently destroy the heating cable itself.
This is a question ProLux hears regularly from homeowners and contractors who have just finished installing radiant floor heating. The answer depends on what material was used to embed the system, and the single most important rule is this: follow the embedding material manufacturer's cure time, and wait at least 14 days after the flooring installation is complete before turning the system on.
ProLux recommends a minimum 14-day wait after the flooring installation is complete before activating a LuxHeat system for the first time. If the thinset or self-leveling compound (SLC) manufacturer specifies a longer cure time for their product, follow their guidance instead — their specification takes precedence.

Note that SLC products often list a "walk-ready" time (sometimes as short as 4 hours) that is much shorter than their full cure time. Walk-ready means the surface can bear foot traffic — it does not mean the compound has finished curing or is ready for heat. Always refer to the manufacturer's full cure specification before activating the system.
Thinset mortar and self-leveling compounds cure through a chemical hydration reaction — a process that requires time and controlled moisture. Introducing heat from the floor system before this reaction is complete can disrupt the curing chemistry, drive out moisture prematurely, and weaken the bond between the compound and the substrate.

The results of early activation range from minor to severe: hairline cracks in grout lines, tile debonding from the substrate, or complete setting compound failure that requires tearing out and reinstalling the floor. Mortar and SLC manufacturers may also deny warranty claims if they determine the product was exposed to heat before it had fully cured.
A common belief is that running the floor heating gently will help thinset or SLC cure faster or stronger. There is no reliable evidence that this is true. ProLux does not recommend it, and there is a real risk that it does the opposite by interfering with the curing process. The safest and most reliable approach is to let the materials cure at room temperature over the full recommended period.
Even within a single product category, cure times are not fixed. Several variables can extend or reduce the time needed:
When conditions are not ideal, add time rather than subtract it. If you are unsure, contact the thinset or SLC manufacturer directly with the product name and the installation conditions.
The 14-day curing wait applies after the floor is installed. But there is a second, equally important rule that applies before and during installation: never connect the heating cable or mat to power while it is in open air.

LuxHeat constant-wattage heating elements are designed to operate embedded within thinset mortar or self-leveling compound, with the finish floor above. The surrounding materials act as a heat sink, allowing the system to dissipate energy evenly upward into the room. If the cable is energized before it is properly embedded — while it is still on the spool, in the mat, or laid on the subfloor before mortar is applied — there is nowhere for the heat to go. The cable overheats within seconds and melts, destroying the system entirely.
This is an irreversible failure. A melted cable cannot be repaired on-site, and the damage voids the product warranty. The correct way to verify the system during installation is resistance testing with a multimeter — not by energizing it.

Once the full cure period has passed, do not immediately set the thermostat to your normal comfort temperature. A gradual ramp-up over the first several days is the recommended approach — both as a best practice for the floor assembly and as a way to confirm the system is working correctly before relying on it for heat.
Start with a low floor temperature setpoint — around 64°F to 68°F — and increase it by no more than 5°F per day until you reach your preferred operating temperature. This gradual acclimation is particularly important for temperature-sensitive finish floors like laminate, LVP, and engineered wood, which expand and contract with heat changes. No — not by energizing it. Never connect a LuxHeat cable or mat to power before it is properly embedded in thinset or SLC and the floor installation is complete. A brief power-on is enough to overheat and melt an unembedded cable. The correct way to verify the system before and during installation is to test resistance with a multimeter (the resistance should match the rated value on the product label). Yes. The wait time is set by whichever embedding material was used. SLC products have their own cure schedules — separate from their walk-ready time — and these vary significantly by brand.
